Lamassa on Latangai Island
Was formed when an ancient volcanic caldera partially collapsed thousands of years ago, allowing the sea to enter.
The harbour is ringed by several smaller volcanoes, most of which are dormant or extinct. In September 1994 however, two of the volcanoes simultaneously erupted. At night, you can witness the fantastic sunsets and glowing lava of Tarvuvur in the distance.
This location was home to a major American supply base during WWII. At the end of the war, an artificial reef was created by dumping trucks, jeeps, tractors, bulldozers and large amounts of ammunition.
